Exploring Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter: History, Shops and Food

Street view of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter

The Jewellery Quarter is one of the few parts of Birmingham that still looks and feels like its history. Cobbled side streets, Georgian workshops, and independent jewellers who’ve been trading from the same buildings for generations — it’s a different pace to the city centre ten minutes away.

See where it started. The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter is set inside a real working jewellery factory that operated right up until the 1980s, machinery and all. It’s a genuinely interesting hour, and one of the few museums in the city that tells you something you couldn’t have guessed.

Eat well, without the queues. The Quarter has quietly become one of Birmingham’s best food destinations. Look for the independent bakeries around Vyse Street, the small-plates restaurants tucked into converted workshops, and the coffee shops that don’t have a city-centre queue out the door.

Browse for something real. If you’re after jewellery, this is still the place — many of the shops here design and make on site rather than simply selling. Worth a look even if you’re not buying, just to see the trade still working.

Get around easily. Snow Hill Station is on the edge of the Quarter, putting you a few minutes from the city centre and a direct line out toward Solihull and beyond. It also means the area works well if you’re here for a few nights and want to explore further afield without a car.

We have several homes in and around Hockley and the Jewellery Quarter, ranging from compact apartments to larger houses suited to longer stays. Guests tend to pick this area when they want somewhere with character, close to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Utilita Arena, but a step removed from the city centre noise.

As with all of our properties, you get your own door code, a fixed nightly rate with no platform fees added at checkout, and a direct line to Danny and Callum if you need anything during your stay. Check availability in the Jewellery Quarter for your next visit.
